According to Social Identity Theory, individuals strive to maintain or enhance a positive social identity by being a member of a group. Ingroup favoritism is a fundamental and evolutionarily functional aspect of human perception, and it occurs even in groups that are not particularly meaningful. People often help members of their own group more than members of other groups. Here we propose a mathematical framework for the evolution of in-group favoritism from a continuum of strategies. Unlike previous models, we do not pre-suppose that players never cooperate with out-group members. In this case, in-group favoritism drives trade preferences only to the extent that one's in-group benefits relative to the out-group.
